Memorization: A Tool For Joy!

I am always finding new songs to sing for Worship at Washington Cathedral. One of the joys that comes with singing is memorization. Or should I say.......from memorization comes joy! While, it's hard work at the time....... to memorize a song for presentation brings me so much joy! I've found the same joy from memorizing scripture.

This year our Senior Pastor, Tim White, has challenged us to memorize the whole fourth chapter of Ephesians. We'll do that in the form of a melody line. It really helps us to memorize the scripture and retain it for longer periods of time.
For some reason, when you commit a song to memory, the Holy Spirit can then work within you to really "speak" the song to you.

Have you ever had the opportunity to memorize......say, a Praise Song? What is it like for you to sing a song that you have memorized? Let me know! Click on the little "comment:" below.
Blessings to you,
Pastor Naomi

For my first play in 7th grade, I had 90 lines to memorize. It was tough, but I did it. In my next play a few months later I had 280! God knew I could do it, and I did. At my last job I had only a week to memorize a few pages of script, which was very boring, since there was no characterization, but God made it happen for me. Memorizing Ephesians IV will be the biggest challenge yet, but I know He will see to it that I accomplish this!

For me, singing makes me feel so much closer to the Holy Spirit...It is not a feeling I can put into words. When we memorize things in the choir to music, it just makes it easier...and it never leaves you...I hum them when I am working. For me "Music is Prayer".

Memorizing music is very powerful for me. It enables me to really mean what I sing. When you don't have to worry about the words or the notes anymore, you can truly sing with your whole body and soul.
